When I read "Wild Card" I couldn't help but give in to the urge to cuss and throw the book across the room when I read just how cruel and disrespectful Noah was toward Bella. The sex scenes were intense but about halfway I was skipping them to make sure this was a romance novel and not the Kama Sutra with crappy dialog in-between. But no, all I got was a book that was 418 pages long and half of them contained the words of "pussy" and "cock" and f**k. "Wild Card" was one of the first books I read from Lora Leigh and I admitted that I was anticipating an actual love story between the characters since the back cover seemed so interesting. I refuse to call Lora’s characters as the "Hero" and "Heroine" since they are anything but that. I wish I can say how much I loved this book and how much the characters made me root for them.

But I stopped playing video games because most games are boring, partly because of the protagonist issue and partly because of the predictability of moving from level to level and facing off against bosses. I have a son who's a game designer and I'm very familiar with the medium. We have a character with this negative motivation and that character makes a lousy fictional protagonist.Ĭard: I used to. And he always has the same set of motivations, which is to kill and don't die. WN: As a storyteller, what do you think about the video game medium?Ĭard: Video games are a viable storytelling medium, but the trouble is that video games always have the same protagonist, which is the player. This is only possible because the game creators have the desire to tell a story about living, breathing people. Most of the games simply don't have the characterization to allow this to happen. We're going to have people that say, "We have this great game, let's do a novel and a movie" - and the novel will suck. WN: Do you think others will imitate this multi-entertainment model of launching a franchise?Ĭard: After we succeed fantastically with this, everyone else is going to imitate it without understanding why it works. They'll continue that process through generation after generation after generation. So what they'll do is they'll take the missions that aren't as successful and they'll cast them aside, and now they'll form three new versions of saving missions. What they'll find is, for example, when you have to save something, you spend more time playing than say, when you have to kill or find something. They generally call this "time on device," which is a term that's borrowed from the gambling world - how long are you on the slot machine. They'll look at how long you play, whether you return to the game, and generally how engaged you are. to different people, sort of A/B test these different missions. So one thing that a lot of the designers do is they'll release different versions of missions. Part of the reason for that is, I think, that these large game companies have access to an incredible trove of data. So that to me suggests that it's a weaponized game it's an experience that's very, very hard to resist. One hundred million, roughly, have played the game, and by many measures, about half of them have developed an addiction, at least temporarily. Once again, the lasting effects of World War I play a huge part in the storyline, and for me that is one of the biggest pluses to reading this series. Maisie needs to find Charlotte and her friends and work out what it is exactly that makes four respectable young women the targets for a killer. The only down side seems to be that she has recently broken off her engagement although it soon becomes clear that she lives in a very controlled environment - everything being controlled by her father.Īppearances can be deceptive though, especially when a friend of hers is murdered and by tying the clues together it becomes clear that there is something far more sinister going on. This isn't the first time that Miss Charlotte Waite has disappeared which is in itself quite perplexing, because she is a young lady who seems to have a very comfortable life - she is wealthy and pampered and has the best of everything. Find his missing daughter without involving the police and the media, and do it quickly and Mr Waite would reward her sweetly. When Maisie is called in by one of the richest men in Britain, it seems a relatively simple task. It took me only five months which is a much better effort! Having put off reading the first Maisie Dobbs books for years, I was determined to not do the same thing with the second book.
